Southern Ocean Beach House
Situated atop a dune, this project presented a number of design challenges and opportunities. The natural orientation of the site is towards the Southern Ocean. This is at odds with the need to capture winter sun into the living spaces for good passive solar efficiency. And while the ocean view is always beautiful, the cool wind often makes sitting outside uncomfortable. The solution to both these challenges is in the planning of the house around a central courtyard, which allows north sun into the living spaces, and provides a protected outdoor space to view the ocean away from the harsh wind. The building materials, limestone and weathered timber, have been used to allow the house to age gently into its natural dune setting, and allude to the beach with its seashells and driftwood.
