Soldiers Hill, Ballarat
This project is located in the historically significant suburb of Soldiers Hill, in the city of Ballarat, Australia. The precinct has an eclectic mix of architectural styles ranging from the extravagance of Boom Style Gold Rush era dwellings, to more austere depression era bungalows, of which the original house was one. In keeping with the already established architectural eclecticism of Soldiers Hill, the addition purposefully introduces a new architectural vocabulary. The triangular plan form introduces a dynamic geometry to the site. The horizontal texture of traditional weatherboards is inverted to become vertical timber shiplap on the addition. The minimalist form of a parapet roof contrasts with the complex gable roof forms of the original house. Inside, the compartmentalized original interior gives way to open, flowing space.
