Sherwood Addition

A complete transformation of a 1970's kit home, into a sustainable family home using natural timber and rammed earth walls. The addition wraps to the northwest of the existing dwelling, to provide a sheltered courtyard space which is protected from the often brisk southwesterly winds. Given the location on the edge of a forest, all the materials and construction details of the addition are designed to be highly bushfire resistant, while the overall building form offers a degree of shielding to the original home. Some of the key elements of the design include passive solar design with regard to window placement, rammed earth walls for a balanced level of thermal mass, and redesigning the veranda to the existing house to allow winter sun into the house.
