Nth Fitzroy Addition
An inner suburban terrace house expansion and modernization project. The addition to the original terrace house is positioned behind and over the old structure. We see a new steel and glass volume intersecting the traditional monolithic terrace house form, where remnant and new walls blend and dissolve into glass at the lane way corner to provide an illusion of space in a tight inner-city site. The historic form of the Victorian terrace reads as a palimpsest, and is echoed through the proportion and roof forms of the modernist addition. The rigidly defined spaces of the existing house morph into a looser set of spaces through the addition of a mezzanine which leads to a rooftop terrace, all defined by an alternative axial geometry.
