Situated in the heart of Northcote, the original two bedroom cottage had been built out by several unsympathetic neighbouring developments. To create a renewed sense of privacy the studio addition wraps close to the site boundaries to form a courtyard space in the middle of the site. Standard timber roof trusses have been used on their side to form the roof over the studio. These allow for capturing winter sun and shading in summer, while also offering protection from overlooking by neighbours. The clerestory windows allow the polished concrete floor of the studio to act as a thermal mass to provide natural winter warmth. Thus on a small site with a small budget, a lot has been achieved.
