Lilydale House

Conceived as a series of pavilion spaces connected around a central courtyard the house creates privacy while taking in distant views. The open courtyard form also provides an opportunity for large zones of glazing for passive solar gain. The expansive pavilion spaces are held together by two offset parallel east-west block walls, one external, the other internal, stretching end to end. The external block wall is both landscape and building, concealing garages and studio, while presenting as a single monolithic element. The internal honed block wall extends along a glazed north facing breezeway, delivering both winter and summer thermal tempering though balanced thermal mass. At basement level, bedroom / living spaces are cut into the hillside, with block retaining walls also creating excellent thermal properties.
